There is an excitement in the air within the medical circles of Harrismith. The first Medical Centre in Harrismith's history is opening. The Medical Centre will consist of general practitioners, Dr Charlene Kemp and Dr Christine Boshoff, who are going to start practising at 17 Warden street (The old Dreykon building) on the 3nd of January 2012.
What makes this Medical Centre so novel is that it is the first female practice in Harrismith. They will also have their own dietician and psychologist practising with them,which are also female! The dietician will be Chantelle Greyling(Kunz) and the psychologist Michelle Veitch.
And yet another first will be that the Centre will include the first CDE Diabetic clinic in the Eastern Freestate!
The Diabetic clinic will be part of the CDE provider network which is a network of over 300 trained "Centres for Diabetes" over the country which are affiliated to the Centre of Diabetes and Endocrinology in Johannesburg. This Centre will provide a high quality and comprehensive Diabetes Management Programme for the Diabetics in our area. Dr Boshoff and Dr Kemp have both done the training needed to be accredited providers of this programme.
Our services and care will be available to all Diabetics as strict control of this condition is mandatory to prevent complications in the long term. But those that are on the specific medical aids that are contracted to the CDE will have the most benefit and convenience from this programme, the list of these medical aids will be available at our medical centre at your enquiry.
Besides the care available from the accredited Diabetes Care Doctors, the programme will include access to a specially trained Diabetes Nurse Educator at our centre who will provide the necessary education needed for the day to day managing of the condition, as well as consultations yearly with a dietician, podiatrist(foot specialist) and with an opthalmologist(eye specialist). Also, the Centre will dispense the necessary medication, insulin, glucometers and test strips, and provide the needed blood tests, all funded by a capitation fee provided monthly by the medical aids to our centre. An added advantage is that Diabetes will not deplete your medical aid if on this CDE programme. There will also be a 24-hour emergency hotline facility to assist in diabetes emergencies.
There is a very high standard of care of Diabetes with this programme, so it will be of great benefit for the Diabetics in our area.
